Caves in Navajas: a unique experience in the natural surroundings of Castellón. Trails for the whole family

Shrine of the Holy Cave

The famous children’s song “Let it rain, let it rain, the Virgin of the Cave…” refers to this grotto. Patron saint of speleologists, this beautiful Catholic shrine is located about 15 km from Navajas. You can park at the entrance, though you should check the hours (it’s open in the mornings and, in the summer, also in the afternoons). It’s very easy to get to, so we recommend combining your visit with a trip to the Menhir del Cantal and the Cueva del Murciélago, both located in the municipality of Altura.

Bat Cave

Located in Altura, be sure to follow our directions carefully to get there. It’s suitable for children, but we don’t recommend it for people with limited mobility due to the steepness of the final stretch.

Here are directions on how to get there, since the signage is quite poor:
1. Leave Altura heading toward Alcublas or Cueva Santa
2.- After two kilometers, you’ll see an unmarked, almost straight path on the left (Camino de la Murta)
3.- After passing the Pocicos de Altura (where you can take a quick dip) and some picnic areas, you’ll see a wooden sign on the right pointing to the cave
4.- As soon as you take the path, there’s another sign on the right. You can leave your car parked here or continue if you’re on a bike. It’s about a 20-minute walk from this point
5.-You’ll see the PRACTICANTE hut. You’re on the right track.
6.-Keep going straight until you see a white sign that says “Private road: no trespassing.” At this point, you can leave your bikes and continue on foot
7.-Don’t cross the restricted road. You’ll see a path on the right that goes downhill, and then after a few meters it goes up to the left and seems to lead into a field of almond trees. Follow this trail and you’ll see that at the end there’s a wooden sign pointing to the Cueva del Murciélago.
8.-What remains is a goat trail that leads to the cave. Enjoy it!

Cave of Cerdanya

Located in the municipality of Caudiel, it’s much easier to get there via Pina de Montalgrao. Just drive through the village of Pina until you reach the windmills, and you’ll see a sign on the left. Park your car and start walking. You’ll be there in about 40 minutes. It’s a hike you can do with kids. Don’t forget a flashlight and water in the summer!

San José Caves

These caves, located in the Vall d’Uxó, about a 20-minute drive from Navajas, feature the longest cave system in Castellón and are also home to the longest navigable underground river in Europe. The tour includes an 800-meter boat ride and a 250-meter walking tour. We recommend purchasing tickets in advance due to high demand.
